Our opportunity to make rooftop solar mandatory for new builds

The government has launched a new consultation on building standards which closes on 6th March. It might not sound too exciting, but this is big news.

Why? The government is considering making rooftop solar panels a basic expectation for most new buildings including all new houses. This would be a huge win for our rooftop solar campaign and would help cut carbon emissions and energy bills whilst protecting space for nature and farming.

But now we need your help to show the government that the public supports this common-sense solution too. Please can you take a moment to send an email responding to the government’s consultation? All you need to say is that you support the maximum ambition on rooftop solar for new buildings and why this matters to you.

By clicking on the ‘Respond Now’ button below, you will open an email to the consultation email address and all you need to do is take two minutes to write a short message saying that:

  1. You are responding to the government’s Future Homes and Building Standards consultation as a member of the public.
  2. Which region of the country you live and whether you are a homeowner/private tenant/housing association tenant etc.
  3. You want to see the government apply the highest possible standards expecting rooftop solar panels as standard on new buildings, so you support option 1 for questions 7, 9 and 10 in the consultation.
  4. Why rooftop solar on new buildings is a priority for you – these don’t have to be just carbon savings but could also be lower bills, sparing land for nature and farming etc.

This is a crucial opportunity for all of us to help secure the future of our countryside. Together we can send a clear message and finally set energy policy on a course that tackles the climate emergency without industrialising the landscapes we love.

We will send a response to the consultation by the 6th March deadline.
